Newborn Screening
Newborn Screening is available to newborns and is designed to identify those at risk of some rare, but serious life-threatening medical conditions. Early detection and treatment in some cases can prevent lifelong intellectual and developmental issues and dramatically improve quality of life. Newborn screening is a successful public health program conducted worldwide. Newborn screening helps to prevent unnecessary disability and is an important component of early childhood health care. However, the vast majority of Leukodystrophies are absent from newborn screening programs. The Mission Massimo Foundation will engage with genetic health services and both State and Federal governments to broaden the number of diseases screened to include Leukodystrophies allowing critical early intervention to combat the progression of the disease.
