STEM CELL THERAPIES

Stem-cell therapy is an intervention strategy that introduces new stem cells into damaged tissue in order to treat disease.  The intention of stem cell therapy in patients with Leukodystrophy is to stimulate the production of myelinogenic oligodendrocytes which form healthy myelin sheaths to protect axons, helping nerve cells communicate with each other.

Recent human clinical trials using induced pluripotent stem cells in Shiverer Mice (Rodent Leukodystrophy) have shown great promise with complete cerebral myelination.  Ongoing support of these trials is required to drive research to human clinical trials and treatment for children with leukodystrophy in the long run.
